Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a celebration of the civil-rights icon's life, but it's also one of remembering her late mother, Edith Mae Reed, whose birthday is was on that day. Reed attended a three-day invitation-only event called Achieving Coaching Excellence offered by the Black Coaches Administration in 2102. Now, she tries to pass on the teachings of her parents to her young son, Carlon. This March Madness story, of a player-mother and her caring coach, who almost led Jackson State to an upset of LSU, deserves to be told. Reed received an associate degree in sports medicine from Hinds Community College in 2001.
